I receive gmail using pop.gmail.com, port 995, etc. I do not send through 
gmail, although I have it configured for smtp port 587. I usually send 
through my zoho.com account, as I have found that they are a lot less hassle 
than messing round with Google crap. However, we cannot escape Google 
entirely, and I still use it to receive certain emails, mostly for business. 

Did you try "check what the server supports" in the configuration settings? I 
notice that Gmail doesn't like Kmail using encryption. SSL (no TLS), but 
clear text for authentication?!?! 

That bothers me, although at least I can use Gmail to receive, which is better 
than not being able to use it at all.
