yeah, that's the problem.

however I got my '|'!

I've booted to MX, specifically MX-19.2_ahs_x64.iso.

it crashes out of the DE to the command line or rather stalls on F7 but you get a command line at F1. the alt-gr+> trick works!

I think it's detected wi-fi! iwconfig yields some output for wlan0. ah, 'nmcli device wifi list' shows various SSIDs!

'inxi -G' doesn't say much.

so that's brought me far. in principle I could install a command-line only system.

not sure how much more I want to struggle but maybe I can get a DE working.
