Leslie,
quicklauncher can arrange icons in multiple columns (I use it like this), but those are not the icons of opened
applications, so you can't drop a file there and have it opened in the corresponding application.
Taskbar supports icon-only but currently they arrange top-down rather then left-right, resulting in a single column.
Here you can drop a file and have it opened in the application, because when an icon is displayed in the taskbar, the
application is already running.

I have a create an issue on TGW for a taskbar icon placement improvement.

Regarding "Dock Application Bar", confirmed that it does not seems to do much and it was like this even in KDE 3.5.10.
