Hi Gene!

I have a MFC-J5320DW. I cannot configure the print quality from TDE, but I can from the cups web frontend http://localhost:631 

There are settings for "paper quality" that affect the print quality, you might want to test all posible values. Also there is a setting for "draft" and "ink saving" somewhere.
