Ah, don't be so hard on yourself!  In Konqueror: R14.0.4, the "Split view" 
sub-menu is under the 'View' menu.

Did you try a full reinstall of Konqueror [tdio(sp)?, ???] ?

$ apt install --reinstall {package name}

That's fixed packages for me in the past (as well as usually fixing 'kept 
back' packages).

PS:  Here, I always forget what this command is, so I saved it to my cheat 
sheet file...
$ dpkg -S /opt/trinity/bin/konqueror
konqueror-trinity: /opt/trinity/bin/konqueror
