Have either of you considered something old to replace your use of Konq as file manager? KDE3[1] has been my primary Linux desktop since day one of using a Linux GUI, and I've /never/ used Konq as a file manager (not counting when it opens on USB stick or OM insertion, where I allow it to open as a mount/umount facility). OFMs[2] predate Konq by well over a decade. Without any OFM in Linux I probably would still have been using OS/2 until 2-3 years ago (when mozilla.org products for OS/2 got too far behind to catch up and had to be forked). I (constantly) use two OFMs, MC, which all distros provide, many by default, and FC/L[3]. MC runs on the vttys same as it does in Konsole, so same if you find yourself in a rescue boot as normally). [1] TDE has been on several PCs here for several years, and most likely will replace KDE4 as primary within the next 5-6 months.
