I have multiple TDE installations on multiple distros using various aged ATI,
Intel and NVidia gfxcards, all of which "just work" with TDE using FOSS video
drivers exclusively. Proprietary drivers, requiring proprietary tools and manual
intervention to install, remove and maintain, are anathema to categorization as
"just working".

If there's any one important characteristic for choosing a "just works" gfxcard
for Linux, it's making sure it is not a design or model that was initially
introduced within 9-12 months or so before the release of your distro.
