Kate seems to not always react the same. I was about to answer that your directions dos *not* work here (openSuSE, TDE 14.0.0 and 14.0.3). I followed your suggestion on my laptop and Kate still opens with Documents and side bar. Now the settings seem to stick on my desktop. For me, the setting that works best is to not save sessions (automaticaly) and save them manually.
