interesting thread, but no time to look closer - however I've seen packets
being dropped silently by firewalls, routers and switches and strange
things happening as result - things like this here, same if routes do not
work properly (but it does not look like this), so if it is not a firewall
or the server itself, it might be something on the network -
tcpdump/wireshark when this happens might help.

Also I remember Felix has many machines - no idea what infrastructure he
has, but it could be related to that fact.
