Like btrfs? It really depends on btrfs growing a library, and Python
bindings for said library. I believe very strongly that for things like
this we should rely on library APIs and not parse command-line utility
output.

targetd is using the kernel target (aka LIO), so this would require LIO
to support nbd or ataoe first. I'm pretty sure contributions in these
areas would be welcome, but those protocols haven't been a priority
given LIO's existing iSCSI and FCoE support.
