It's the other way around that would be weird ;-)
I remember seing mentoring requests for the package dating back from
2009 on the debian BT, and mentions that the package (at least at the
time) was apparently in a state of no-maintenance (not the debian
package, the upstream one.)

What is strange though is not finding it on PyPi. Maybe it has to do
with the fact it is a C module ? (not sure, I am not using it
myself...).
