The patch below does not apply to the 6.1-stable tree. If someone wants it applied there, or to any other stable or longterm tree, then please email the backport, including the original git commit id to <stable@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>. To reproduce the conflict and resubmit, you may use the following commands: git fetch https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/ linux-6.1.y git checkout FETCH_HEAD git cherry-pick -x f6007dce0cd35d634d9be91ef3515a6385dcee16 # <resolve conflicts, build, test, etc.> git commit -s git send-email --to '<stable@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>' --in-reply-to '2023092038-jingle-defuse-c9fa@gregkh' --subject-prefix 'PATCH 6.1.y' HEAD^.. The end result may be memory corruption or use-after-free memory access. See this description of a UAF with multipath_message(): https://listman.redhat.com/archives/dm-devel/2022-October/052373.html Fix this bug by introducing a new rw semaphore "devices_lock". We grab devices_lock for read in retrieve_deps and we grab it for write in dm_get_device and dm_put_device.
