Right. I was thinking in Debian's architecture names. Actually, the
setting is
| CONFIG_M686=y

More bits of information: gcc is 4.4 (4.4.5-8 as in Debian squeeze),
the problem also occurs with 4.7 (4.7.2-5 in Debian wheezy).

The guilty commit is obviously
Subject: [ 38/56] ext4: use atomic64_t for the per-flexbg free_clusters count
as reverting it makes the error go away.

Both 3.9-rc4 and 3.9-rc5 build without problem.
