security tokens in userspref

Hello

How do security_tokens get generated in squirrelmail? I noticed one account having a magnitude more tokens than other users that caused them not to be able to log in. They were getting an error akin to "Preference database error (unknown error). Exiting abnormally". I blanked out the security_tokens for that user and they were able to log in again. According to an old thread on the users list, I found that it is due to heavy webmail use, and that setting a lower $max_token_age_days can possibly help. However, I compared this account to another heavy webmail user and they didn't have even close to this amount, they had a what I consider a normal amount.

Can anyone shed some light on this and how these get created and why?

Thanks
