ListServ MLM refuses Squirrelmail plain text messages

Starting this morning (2018-05-2) my Squirrelmail (SM) composed posts
to a Listserv mailing list service are being bounced back with this:

There are reports that Thunderbird (TB) users have encountered this
problem and have resolved it by setting some TB option to strict mime.
 But I do not see anything equivalent in SM options settings.

Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening and how it is resolved?
