Problem with folder display options in SM-1.4.23 on FreeBSD-11.1

I sent this to the list before and have had no reply.

I am running SM-1.4.23 under Apache-2.4 on FreeBSD-11.1.  I am
connecting to a Cyrus-IMAP-3.0.5 service also running on FreeBSD-11.1.

I cannot get that SM instance to display mail folders in any other
formate besides the Delimited format whereas the Indented format is
selected. Also, I now discover that I cannot change the folder
display preference from Indented to Long or to Delimited on our
existing SM installation, which is SM-1.422. running under Apache-2.2
on CentOS-6.9.

The behaviour is exhibited by both Firefox and Opera browsers.

What is going on? Did folder preferences become disabled at some
point? How does one control the folder display otherwise?

On the SM-1.4.23 this is what the SM page source says:

<tr>
<td align="right" valign="middle">Selection List Style:</td>
<td align="left"><select name="new_mailbox_select_style" >
<option value="0">Long: "Folder.Subfolder"</option>
<option value="1" selected="selected">Indented:
"&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Subfolder"</option>
<option value="2">Delimited: ".&nbsp;Subfolder"</option>
</select>
</td>
</tr>

But this is what it displays:

  Action (58/58)
  delivery (98/98)
  delivery/accounting (0/0)
  delivery/forwarding (251/251)
  delivery/forwarding/Solis (0/0)
  delivery/gpg (0/0)
  delivery/imports (441/441)
  delivery/payables (41/41)
  delivery/payroll (18/18)
  delivery/private (29/29)
  delivery/redirected (31/31)
  delivery/support (219/219)
  delivery/support/attachments (1/1)
  delivery/support/Investigate (0/0)
  delivery/vendors (4/4)
  Fraud (0/4)

What I expect is:

    Action (0/29)
  - delivery (10/53)
      accounting (0/0)
    - forwarding (77/77)
        Solis (0/0)
      gpg (0/0)
      imports (107/107)
      payables (20/23)
      payroll (3/9)
      private (0/11)
      redirected (17/17)
    - support (41/44)
        attachments (0/0)
        Investigate (0/0)
      vendors (0/2)
    Fraud (0/4)

On the SM-1.4.22 installation this is what the page source contains:

<tr>
<td align="right" valign="middle">Selection List Style:</td>
<td align="left"><select name="new_mailbox_select_style" >
<option value="0">Long: "Folder.Subfolder"</option>
<option value="1">Indented: "&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Subfolder"</option>
<option value="2" selected="selected">Delimited:
".&nbsp;Subfolder"</option>
</select>
</td>
</tr>

But this is what I see displayed in the sidebar:

    Action (0/58)
    Deleted Messages (0/0)
  - delivery (1/48)
      accounting (0/0)
    - forwarding (20/20)
        Solis (0/0)
      gpg (0/0)
      imports (165/165)
      payables (26/29)
      payroll (3/10)
      private (0/11)
      redirected (0/0)
    - support (13/15)
        attachments (0/0)
        Investigate (0/0)
      vendors (0/2)
    Fraud (0/4)

While I expect:

  Action (58/58)
  delivery (100/100)
  delivery/accounting (0/0)
  delivery/forwarding (251/251)
  delivery/forwarding/Solis (0/0)
  delivery/gpg (0/0)
  delivery/imports (441/441)
  delivery/payables (41/41)
  delivery/payroll (18/18)
  delivery/private (29/29)
  delivery/redirected (31/31)
  delivery/support (219/219)
  delivery/support/attachments (1/1)
  delivery/support/Investigate (0/0)
  delivery/vendors (4/4)
  Drafts (54/54)
  Fraud (8/8)

How do I adjust the folder tree display?
