Restore user's mailbox to new server build

I have read the Squirrelmail documentation that says "Squirrelmail
keeps no files, data is in the IMAP server"....I don't find this to be
true with Ubuntu and Squirrelmail because I can copy the file that SQ
keeps in /var/mail/username and it's all their mail and have restored
folks's email this way from a clone drive.

However, how can/would I bring this file over to a new server build of
Squirrelmail because the old server died? I tried to copy the old
file over and I get a mailbox error when I log in. Is there a
checksum of some sort? I really need to get this large user's mailbox
restored/imported, etc.

SquirrelMail version 1.4.22
