hm, ok, this is what i got from the TEST_s:
A003 LSUB "" "*%"
A003 OK Lsub completed.
A004 LIST "*" "*"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2006"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2004"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".Sent"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2005.Sent"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".Junk"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2007.Sent"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2004.Sent"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2006.Sent"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".Drafts"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2007"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2010"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2009"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".Templates"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2009.Sent"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".Trash"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2010.Sent"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2008"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2008.Sent"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" ".2005"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "INBOX"
A004 OK List completed.

so, it sees the .<Whatever>-directories, and wants to have an INBOX?
imagines an INBOX? something like that?^^;

the designated Maildir-directory has the following content:
drwxr-xr-x 2 vmail vmail  4096 2011-08-26 10:14 cur
-rw-r--r-- 1 vmail vmail   137 2011-08-26 10:14 dovecot-keywords
-rw-r--r-- 1 vmail vmail 39833 2011-08-26 10:14 dovecot-uidlist
drwxr-xr-x 2 vmail vmail 81920 2011-08-26 10:14 new
-rw-r--r-- 1 vmail vmail     0 2011-08-26 10:14 subscriptions
drwxr-xr-x 2 vmail vmail  4096 2011-08-26 10:14 tmp

(and also, obviously, the .<whatever>-folders listed above) =)

i´m afraid i didn´t really understand your last paragraph. Did you mean
the IMAP-server-setting (set to dovecot) is not used to directly
interact with dovecot?
i did set the "Set pre-defined settings for specific IMAP servers" to
dovecot, and it tells me this (which seems to be the same as the setting
in "2. Server Settings")
              imap_server_type = dovecot
         default_folder_prefix = <none>
                  trash_folder = Trash
                   sent_folder = Sent
                  draft_folder = Drafts
            show_prefix_option = false
          default_sub_of_inbox = false
show_contain_subfolders_option = false
            optional_delimiter = detect
                 delete_folder = false

best regards
silvana
