How big is that mailbox and what kind of search you are doing? Could you
test your PHP configuration
(http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/TestPHPSettings) and show output_handler
value and list of enabled extensions. Do you use some output compression in
your webserver? Something like mod_gzip.
