I think your statement is correct that this isn't a Squirrelmail issue.

This may be an issue with Postfix and specifically with SMTP
authentication.  I would confirm whether your setup requires SMTP
authentication.  If it does, I would search the Internet on how to
configure an email client to work with a Postfix server requiring
authentication.  If it doesn't, I  would search the Internet on how to
configure Postfix to require authentication.
