Hi. First here's our setup. Linux FC6 apache, php. Imap proxy, zend optimizer squirrelmail of course. For the smtp and imap Exchange 5.5. We have had sluggish response when going to the Inbox, Sending E-mail, and loading configtest.php. I read a tip from squirrelmail about a name resolution issue. This made sense since when our internet connection was not active (and dns was not available to try and resolve an internal network host)the sluggish response for configtest.php loaded instantly. I added the hosts entry for the squirrelmail server. This solved the configtest.php slow load time. But it did not help sending smtp mail, or loading the inbox. This had me stumped. But i vaguely remember that squirrelmail ran fine on a linux box and I remembered that it had samba running on it using our WINS server. SO i figured we could add a LMHOSTS file that preloaded a name (any name) for the squirrelmail's IP. LMHOSTS 192.168.1.x anynameyouwant #PRE The #PRE must be all Caps and it will preload that server's name into the netbios cache thus stopping any attempt to resolve the name via dns. And it WORKED. Loding the inbox always took 6 seconds as name resolutin failed. Now it takes 1-2 seconds. Unfortunately our IMAP does not support sort so I had to disable it in our config.pl. Finally using squirrelmail is not an aggravating experience. HOWEVER, there is still massive slow down if a user tries to sort e-mail by name, time received, or subject. Is there any solution to that? It's just a small hurdle but it would be nice if we cleared it. Thanks for any help you may provide. Hotmail: Trusted email with Microsoft's powerful SPAM protection.
