It may be that the gmail server does not add the \seen correctly. When I select the message in squirrelmail and click the Read button on the message list, it does mark read. Is their a way to make squirrelmail add the tag itself when I view the message? If this is too dificult, I will try to contact google and tell them to fix their IMAP server. I am also going to try my regular imap client and see if I have the same problem there. If I do , I will complain to them anyway.
