taboo, you should not ever try 1.5.1, it is ancient and buggy
and I wont go into the earlier 1.4x versionsa as they have been
done to death in recent weeks and days.

Nope, forget them

8.13.7 is old and has issues upgrade. 8.14.2 is good

They can, if using something like milter-sav/milter-ahead and they use a
non standard db to authenticate you.

As above, its possible depending on what it looks up to know the existence
of such a user

For instance...

Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable
      550 5.1.1 <nobby@xxxxxxxxxx>... User unknown
   To: nobby___
       Cc: ___

Then there's the one with real user that works-
    Message Sent To:
    [X] res

and lastly what happens when it needs to auth agaisnt a db (using my
commercial mail server and not this one)

                                  ERROR:
                       Message not sent. Server replied:

Requested action not taken: mailbox name not allowed
553 sorry, your envelope sender domain must exist (#5.7.1)
       To: res___
       Cc: ___

errrr I nor anyone else gives a damn about Samba or anything else, the
configuration is in relation to your webmail and things can affect it.

As no one can seem to reproduce it, looks like your own your own to
solving it for time being.
