Thanks for the quick reply. 

I upgraded to squirrelmail 1.5.1 and enabled smtps service port in master.cf. That solved the problem.

In those Postfix instructions "TLS" means StartTLS extension and not SMTP
over SSL/TLS. SquirrelMail 1.4.x does not support SMTP STARTTLS extension.

In SquirrelMail 1.4.x "Secure SMTP (TLS)" option is used to control SMTP
over SSL/TLS. If you have enabled Secure SMTP and use 25 for SMTP server
port in SquirrelMail configuration, please disable Secure SMTP or change
port to smtps service port. See SquirrelMail documentation for more
information about TLS
(http://www.squirrelmail.org/docs/admin/admin-5.html#ss5.4).

In Postfix SMTP over SSL is enabled by uncommenting smtps service and
related options in master.cf.
