We moved from uw's setup to dovecot.  One think I noticed was the first
time you accessed a mailbox it timed out.  What was happening was dovecot
was doing its initial indexing of the stuff.  That continued in the
background after the time out. we also did a conversion from mbox to mdir
format using a perl script. On our system you had to set up mail
