Test script works correctly with remote Win2k3 R2 ADS server. Tested ADSin Windows 2000 and 2003 functionality levels. $ldap_host is set to IPaddress or 'ldap://ip-address'. Client uses OpenLDAP 2.3.30 libraries onLinux.
LDAP base is read in v2 and in v3 bind protocol with anonymous orauthenticated bind. Other entries are read with authenticated bind.
If you will find why script is failing with "Protocol error", let me know.
