Sorted.

It was the webhost, you have to login with username@domain rather than just
username, because username is the 'master' account and is where all the spam
is routed for deletion.   If I log in using my full address everything is
OK.

Might be useful for others to note, some places have plugins set so you only
need the username to log in but this is not the case everywhere.  I'll see
about putting in a virtualhost plugin tomorrow.
