Rule No.1 for Debian - Don't modify files in /usr/, if they are not in /usr/local. Your changes will go to /dev/null, when apt-get updates related packages. > But now I come to the next question: Is it advicable updating squirrelmail > by just copying the newer .php files over the installed ones? > Beside of the fact, that dpkg/apt doesn't know about the newer version, > are there any sideeffects that I must be aware of? > There already is nothing deeply configured, like sql-access or hundreds of > mailboxes. It's just in a kind of testing, but of course I don't want to > break the running mailsystem. Backup your data and update to 1.4.8 deb. You can install it with 'dpkg -i squirrelmail_1.4.8-1_all.deb' or fiddle with apt preferences. If something goes wrong - revert to 1.4.4-9 deb. SquirrelMail upgrade does not delete your mailboxes. Only SquirrelMail preferences (/var/lib/squirrelmail or database) can be lost if something goes really bad. If you are afraid that update breaks something, install similar setup on test machine or vmware and try updating SquirrelMail there. http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/KnownBugs (see 1.4.5-1.4.7 sections). http://www.squirrelmail.org/changelog.php (see list of changes between 1.4.4 and 1.4.8) Please upgrade to Sid/Etch SquirrelMail deb or use standard SquirrelMail 1.4.8 package. If you use SquirrelMail 1.4.4-9 with PHP 5.1.4, you will get fatal errors in message listing. -- Tomas ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more?
