What about patching the source? It's helpful if you outline EVERY
step you took to install the plugin and exactly what is wrong. You
don't mention anything wrong with any plugin beside image buttons.
This is what I did to install the plugins:

While my squirrelmail is working fine....

i downloaded the image_buttons-1.4-1.4.tar.gz,username-2.3-1.0.0.tar.gz,image_buttons-1.4-1.4.tar.gz
and compatibility-2.0.4.tar.gz into the /usr/share/squirrelmail/plugins directory and untarred them there.

using the image buttons plugin:

I changed into the image_button directory and copied config.php.sample into config.php

I didn't change anything in the config.php file

I then went into the /usr/share/squirrelmail/config directory and run the conf.pl script and actived the image_button plugin in the panel.

I then went into my mailbox, the buttons were not there. I also tried to change the display prefrences in the options so that icons display with text but I could not still see anything?

For the username plugin I did the same process, but I can't see the username where it says it should display when I log in.

For the change passwd plugin I did the same process, but when I go to the options there is nothing, all the other options diappear.

I have problems only with the plugins that I downloaded, the ones I have discussed above. The plugins that are by default installed like the spamcop plugin are working properly when I enable them.

You mentioned something about patching the source, this is something I haven't done, If you have the directions on how  I could do this I will appreciate very much should this seem to be the problem.
Thank you,
ganizo
