No, as you explained it (correct me if I'm wrong), the username
translation is working, and the target username is "domainless" (just
a username, no "@domain.tld").  Thus the outgoing FROM header is
suffering from having incorrectly constructed the full email by
appending your default domain to that username.  This is NOT a prefs
setting (although if the user has an email pref, that will override
this).

If you want to fix this without having to require that the email pref
be set up, then you merely need to get vlogin working (and again,
there is no reason why it won't do this for you).
