The correct answer depends on where the bottleneck is (memory, disk,
CPU, network, file descriptors, DNS, etc.). In most cases, that answer
is "yes", but specific configuration changes would depend on the current
bottleneck.

What performance limits is your Squid instance hitting? Where is the
bottleneck? IIRC, there are Squid wiki pages and book chapters dedicated
to that complicated topic, but you can start with something as basic as
atop reports, syslog messages, and cache.log errors/warnings.
