If you have good hardware there is nothing much you need to tune.
How many users?

anyone had the chance to do a MIPS vs INTEL GB lan card?
----
More pertinent, today would be a 10GB comparison.

My systems regularly pegged a 1GB Intel card in sys-sys file copies
(125MB/s writes, 119MB/s reads)...

Best speeds I've gotten off of 2x10GB-has been in the 700MB range,
though typical is more likely in the 200-400MB range. HW/SW -- through
file server to null files tops out due to HW on both ends
(both Xeon Nehalams, one 12core@2.6 other 6core at 3.4).

(Intel cards between them direct connect.
