If this is a bug, and it still exists in recent versions, then it should be reported and fixed. Meanwhile, if those leftovers really bother you, you can add custom (or enable higher-level) debugging to figure out which stale files were not deleted and delete them manually (or even from a script). You may be able to do the same by analyzing store.log as well. Sorry, I do not have specific step-by-step instructions for doing this. Alex.
