Memory size = 2 Gigs
cache_mem = 256 M
disk cache = 16 Gigs

I ran memtest86 on the memory but in a different box. It checked out OK.

actually, the motherboard may be broken too.

How does the system behave when squid stops responding? do other programs
work, can you log in and run "top" or "iostat" to see disk I/O?

Did you try to strace the squid process?

Except for squid being unresponsive it behaves normally, all other processes continue to run as they should,
top shows squid running as it does any other time. An strace shows...

access("/etc/ld.so.nohwcap", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

...ten times. I doubt this is significant though.
