I hope you know what are you doing by configuring that big cache_mem... http://wiki.squid-cache.org/SquidFaq/SquidMemory

hmmm, i've read that. i don't by the way,

however, nothing bad has yet happened, mem utilization seems ok, cache hits are up. but it's only been a few days.

HTTP: 1166366 Requests, 710613 Hits ( 61%)

mem_wire: 575164416 ( 548MB) [ 13%] Wired: disabled for paging out
mem_active: + 140029952 ( 133MB) [ 3%] Active: recently referenced
mem_inactive:+ 3199938560 ( 3051MB) [ 77%] Inactive: recently not referenced mem_cache: + 82898944 ( 79MB) [ 2%] Cached: almost avail. for allocation mem_free: + 131850240 ( 125MB) [ 3%] Free: fully available for allocation
mem_used: 880279552 ( 839MB) [ 20%] Logically used memory
mem_avail: + 3414687744 ( 3256MB) [ 79%] Logically available memory
mem_total: = 4294967296 ( 4096MB) [100%] Logically total memory

the machine this is sitting in front of went from 200% to 50% cpu load, which was the ultimate goal, so life is good so far. it's darn fine perky. i almost feel like setting up a bunch of cache machines just for the fun of it.

the most disappointing thing is the CPU load on the cache server, it hovers around zero (0). once i noticed it was at .2 (20%) and thought something was about to happen, but it dropped down to zero again pretty quick. it's rather like having a server that doesn't actually do anything, and you want to load it up with some email servers or database or something just so it feels better.

maybe i'll add another site, which receives much more traffic and see what happens.

I recomment using heap removal policy, even if it's heap lru - it's still
faster than pure LRU

ok, i'll check that out, thanks for the suggestion - i appreciate it.
