Squid performance regression with recent 2.6.26/2.6.28 kernels

Hello,

I am using a customized Web Polygraph recipe based on polymix4 to
benchmark Squid 2.7STABLE6. With Linux kernel 2.6.23.8 the benchmark
indicates that our hardware will allow for approximately 1000 requests
per second. When the kernel is switched to 2.6.28.5 the benchmark
indicates a likely sustained request rate of 500-600 requests per
second.

A different, but much shorter, benchmark shows that Linux kernels
2.6.24 and 2.6.26 also support a lower request rate than 2.6.23.8.

Has anyone else performed any benchmarks using different Linux kernel
versions, or noticed a decrease in performance with more recent
kernels? If so, are there any settings which need to be changed to
bring performance back in line with 2.6.23 (or earlier kernels).

Regards,

Matthew
