You want it transparent or autodetected (WPAD) then, not reverse.

Static dns entries in /etc/hosts pointing to squid will be on the client machine already
If you have the ability to control this, I'm guessing you have some control over the clients. In that case I would go with autodetection if the clients will all be normal modern web browsers. Transparent would be my second preference in places I was in control of.
