Greetings,

Can someone please explain to me how the tcp probes work in squid?

I get the following errors:

2008/08/22 19:43:09| TCP connection to 10.1.1.2 (10.1.1.2:80) failed
2008/08/22 19:43:09| Detected DEAD Parent: 10.1.1.2

Is squid actually requesting an image, or is it just trying to make a
socket connection to the port?

Yes.

When client requests an object, squid:

a) selects a peer based on past info and attempts to open a link to it

b) sends ICP to all peers to figure out who to request object from

If any fail that TCP failure message appears and the peer is marked dead/unusable until some time later, when its re-tried and maybe marked live again.
