actually, I think I know this one. I think you'll find you're hitting
some php configured memory limit and php is just exiting. Squid sees
this as a reply with no data - and hence gives the error.

What you need to do is edit php.ini, turn on logging, log to a file
(say /tmp/log). Restart the web server and watch the logfile.
If it throws an out of memory error then please tweak the memory
settings (max memory size, max upload size, etc) in PHP.

Its not a Squid problem - if its the problem I'm thinking about. :)
