Actually there should be a third case added there..

32-bit CPUs has quitenoticeable process size limitations when one starts
talking GB sized processes even if you have loads of memory in the box.
Depending on OS and settings the upper limit is somewhere in the range
1.5 to 3 GB per process, minus any address space overhead injured by
shared libraries, stack etc.
