Is there a patch written for this?

No.

Do I need to force squid to core in order to do the backtrace?

No, you can also attach with a debugger. But in both cases must Squid be interrupted at the exact message.

Is the backtrace still needed?

A backtrace nearly always helps in identifying problems.
