Why this commit is not merged to 1/4 ?

My rationale was that this approach left 1/4 as binary identical to the upstream repo, leaving what seemed to me like a more clear historical record.

I don't feel strongly about it, if you feel that condensing them would be better, I'm happy to spin them that way.
