Kevin, Thanks for your update. Quite unfortunate that this person already left the group and did not receive our suggestions. But that's life... I have never seen GimpShop or GimPhoto being sold. At least not on their main websites, but I guess there are always persons that try to redistribute the software and charge for it in return. They even charge money for downloading Firefox: http://www.gerv.net/hacking/pay-download-tour/ . That's pretty evil. My main problem with these GIMPShop-like projects is that they are started, attract some attention and then the problem is keeping them up-to-date with the main GIMP developments. I recently saw the progress of the "single window mode" in GIMP 2.8 at http://www.chromecode.com/2009/10/single-window-mode-progress-report.html I guess that is the best way to deal with GimpShop-version: just have an optional (!) single window mode within the main GIMP versions.
