Sounds like something that you could also do with ImageMagick rather than using GIMP. The short answer is "Not yet". When GEGL is integrated in to GIMP it will be able to handle images with much higher bits per pixel images than it currently handles. This won't happen for some time (at least until sometime after GIMP 2.4 is release) so don't hold your breath waiting for it. -- Cheers!
