I was confused because HARDLIGHT is not a new layer mode, yet it fails.. so the compatibility is not consistent.. whereas i expect GRAIN-MERGE-MODE being relatively new layer blending mode, to adopt the latest style... it is a good choice to append -MODE, as long as it is consistent across all modes. i have removed all deprecated functions and static names.
