php and mm problem?

/usr/bin/php is ending with a message on stderr:
PHP Fatal error: Unable to start session mm module in Unknown on line 0

Apache fails similarly if it loads modules/libphp4.so

php-4.1.2-7.2.6
mm-1.1.3-11

were built from SRPMS at
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/updates/7.2/en/os/SRPMS/

strace shows:
shmget(IPC_PRIVATE, 67108864, IPC_CREAT|0x180|0600) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid
argument)
close(0) = 0
unlink("/tmp/session_mm_cgi501.sem") = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)

towards the end. Perhaps the problem begins earlier?

I checked that /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax was 33554432, with no .sem files
on any filesystems when apache wasn't running.

Is there a php newer than 4.1.2 that RH 7.x systems should be using?

Thanks,
~ Daniel
