RE: Setting up Printers

lpr not starting has nothing to do with your Samba definitions not showing
up in the Windows Network Neighborhood. Still, it's something you need to
fix. You need to understand that Samba and lpr don't really "know" about
each other very much. Certainly lpr knows absolutely nothing about Samba.
So, define the printer in /etc/printcap for lpr, and that should make it
happy.

The printer not showing up is related to nmbd and WINS. The nmbd daemon is
responsible for making the NETBIOS names known to the network.

At this point, I would recommend going through the Samba problem diagnosis
documentation and see what all works, and what doesn't. The doc comes with
the software. (Or it should. I seem to recall Red Hat not including all of
it, but that's kind of hazy and I could be wrong.)

The Samba problem diagnosis stuff, and the "Using Samba" book that comes
with the package will both be a big help in gathering more information.

We are relatively small, and have only one Win NT server which provides the
WINS service to everyone. So, the 172.16.0.121 address is common to everyone
here. Here are the results of the grep:

[root@cofr3 root]# ps -ax | grep mbd
 3099 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
 3106 ? S 0:06 /usr/sbin/nmbd -D
12316 pts/0 S 0:00 grep mbd

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------
Perhaps a more astute observation involves the LPR daemon. It appears that
LPR does not want to start because there are no printers defined. The
paradox to me is that the bhrshp1 printer is in fact defined as a printer
share in the smb.conf file.

[bhrshp1]
        path = /var/spool/lpd/bhrshp1
        valid users = root,illingsk,@Treasury
        printable = Yes

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------
This makes me inclined to believe that this issue is more closely associated
with the lpr daemon rather than wins. Any suggestions on what configuration
changes I need to make to get it started would be greatly appreciated.

Since you're specifying a WINS server, you should make sure that your Win2K
clients are using the _same_ WINS server. The other thing to do is make
sure that nmbd is running: ps ax | grep mbd

I am trying to set up an HP 4050N printer on a Red Hat Linux v7.2 virtual
machine running Samba v2.21 . The server IP is 172.17.60.6, and the printer
IP is 172.16.0.116 . Since they appear to be on different subnets, I was
inclined to suspect that I simply needed to specify 172.16.0.255 in the
remote announce field.

Here are some other pertinent settings:

[global]
workgroup cofrny
netbios name cofr3
interfaces 172.16.60.6/255.255.255.0
security DOMAIN
printing sysv
map to guest Bad User
preferred master TRUE
local master YES
domain master TRUE
dns proxy Yes
wins server 172.16.0.121

[bhrshp1]
path /var/spool/lpd/bhrshp1
valid users root,illingsk,@Treasury
printable Yes

After restarting the Samba daemons, I still could not locate the printer via
the add new printer wizard on a Win2kPro workstation. I am struggling to
ascertain what else should be done. Can you help?

Thank you in advance for your time.
