Pete, I understand what you're saying, and can sympathize. The message you need to take back to the people who make these policies is this: Red Hat is trying to concentrate more on gaining ground in the enterprise market. Enterprise customers, such as my company, expect a certain amount of candor from their suppliers. IBM used to have a policy very similar to what Red Hat has now. Their customer base beat up on them for years and years because the customers have a legitimate need to know what sorts of things are coming, _very roughly_ when (if dates slip no one gets too upset because they know things change) they're coming, etc. IBM eventually changed their policy and everyone is much happier now. Customers get a vague idea of what is coming, what is being phased out, etc., etc., IBM engineers such as Alan Altmark, and Romney White can speak a little more freely, and so on. Everyone benefited from the policy change. Accompanying that, though, was the understanding that only those official IBM documents that so stated were to be absolutely counted upon. Anything else was very unofficial, but still very useful. To be unable to get an answer to such an important question such as "Will Red Hat continue to produce Linux/390 distributions" is unacceptable in the enterprise market. The executives in Red Hat need to understand that and take the gags off the mouths of the people who know what's going on. Again, I understand that you have to live with the policies that are currently in place. I just hope you'll pass this message on to whomever makes those policies. It is extremely hazardous to give out a forward looking statement. Suppose I say you "oh sure, I am working on 7.3/s390", and then we do not meet the schedule, or something else happens, such as AS 2.x/s390 release, or a some other change of direction. It's a lawsuit business right there. Neither my salary, nor Florian's is remotely enough to cover attorney fees, never mind the settlement! So, why don't you lay off of such questions at technical lists? They are NOT going to be answered by engineers. The ONLY person who is authorized to make any forward looking statements in public is the company spokeperson Mark Webbink. Florian is putting his career on the line to answer your quetion, so say him thanks, and please be content. -- Pete > From: "Wilson, Eric" <Eric.Wilson@anheuser-busch.com> > Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 09:56:36 -0500 > Sorry, you response was a bit confusing.
