I have tried using just the RPM to update packages but I get into dependency

Try updating just the up2date packages, and possibly the python packages,
via RPM. Once you get those updated, try
up2date -p
and then update the rest of your system.
Alternately, read the release notes for RH 4, there's a mention of the
new free() checks, and how you disable them so applications that misbehave
aren't abort()ed.
