I have tried using just the RPM to update packages but I get into dependency
nightmare. Same with
yum and apt. Any help appreciated.

Try updating just the up2date packages, and possibly the python packages,
via RPM. Once you get those updated, try

	up2date -p

and then update the rest of your system.

Alternately, read the release notes for RH 4, there's a mention of the new free() checks, and how you disable them so applications that misbehave
aren't abort()ed.
