I brought this up on the list a month ago, the solution rpms are up on our
web site.
you need the compat rpms.

rpm -Uvh MySQL-shared-3.23.58-1-compat-1-2.i386.rpm \
MySQL-shared-4.0.22-0-compat-1-2.rhel.i386.rpm \
MySQL-server-standard-4.1.12-0.rhel3.i386.rpm

Have you tried rpm -e --force ?
As for not being RPM's.. Why can you not download the RPMs from
MySQL? I use them here and they work fine.
